Dustin Huntington

I started photographing birds over 50 years ago, when cameras and photography were very different.   I was fortunate in being able to travel widely and photograph in many wild areas.  I have now seen almost 3000 bird species worldwide and photographed over 2100 of them. I gradually branched out to also photograph insects, and when I started scuba diving, fish and other underwater creatures.

My educational background is in physics and mathematics, which led to an interest in highly technical photography techniques such as high magnification stacked microphotography, infrared and solar imaging - but always with a goal of producing artistic images.

My photos have been used in various publications including:

  • The Handbook of the Birds of the World

  • A Field Guide to North American Insects by Kenn Kaufman

  • Bird Watches Digest Bird Portrait Competition - First Place

  • New Mexico Magazine Nature Photo competition 2022 and 2023

  • American Entomological Society Calendar 2022, 2023 and 2025

  • Photo chosen for Flickr “Explore” group

  • Common Dragonflies of the Southwest by Kathy Biggs

  • Dragonflies of the Bitter Lake NWR by Dustin Huntington

  • IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement

  • Dragonfly displays at Bottomless Lake State Park and Rock Lake Hatchery

  • Albuquerque Biopark Calendar 2019

  • Xerces Society Dragonflies of North America Calendar

  • Xerces Society Wings publications

  • Ethology - international Journal of behavioral Biology    Feb 2012

  • Bioscape, Journal of the Albuquerque Biopark

  • NM Natural History Museum “Naturescapes” Photo Salon

  • Ads by the Nature Conservancy and many others

While it is always nice to have a photo published, my main goal is to show people the beauty of nature and its amazing animals.  I hope this site, and my Flickr site help to do this.

The copyright for all photos belongs to me, but I am very happy to have others use them at no charge provided it is a non-commercial use and photo credit is included.  Any requests commercial use should contact me directly at dhuntington@exsys.com.
